There are 196 countries in the whole world! So many different cultures, traditions and the realization hit me most after I came to Singapore around five years ago. The diverse cultural exposure I found here in terms of nationalities, entertainment, food, etc. was astounding! Since Singapore is so conveniently located, I started travelling quite a bit to the nearby countries… but as I traveled around, I realized one thing… people around the world are more similar than dissimilar. They react to situations in a similar way as I would; they express happiness and anger in different situations in the same way as I would. And most importantly this reflects in the cuisine too, which is why countries which produce similar ingredients have great similarities in cuisine despite being thousands of miles away! It’s interesting to see the similarities and yet diversity in food in different countries….the ingredients, the sauces, spices or herbs used and most importantly the style of cooking. But initially I was quite hesitant to try out different cuisines since in my mind I was always wondering if this would taste like the food I am familiar with. Gradually the seductive variety tempted me to take the leap of faith and introduced my taste buds to a whole new world of culinary delight!
But these experiences were only limited to occasions when we dined out. Then it struck me what if I could convert our everyday meals into a diverse gourmet experience. These exciting thoughts soon began to get replaced by fears – will I have the skills, time (beyond my full-time job), ingredients & kitchenware to pull them off? After trying out my luck with a few experiments, I realized all I needed was the love for food, for my family and of course a little bit of patience! …and I was amazed at the results! What a relief it was from the monotony of the same cuisine everyday and the greatest of all… the big smile on my family’s face after dinner… priceless!
I guess the desire for variety is universal & monotony in our daily meals is something we all face. So here I am sharing the recipes I’ve tried, some original ones and some with some tweaks of my own. I have tried to make them as simple, hassle-free & less time consuming as possible. And also healthy enough for daily consumption. Hope it encourages you as well to take the leap of faith and create happiness for you and your family 🙂
